Gang Activity in the U.S. Armed Forces Increasing
Members of nearly every major street gang have been identified on both domestic and international military installations. These street gangs include the Bloods, Crips, Black Disciples, Gangster Disciples, Hells Angels, Latin Kings, The 18th Street Gang, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Mexican Mafia, Nortenos, Surenos, Vice Lords, and various white supremacist groups. According to a recently released FBI report, Gang-related activity in the US military is increasing and poses a threat to law enforcement officials and national security.- Since 2004, the FBI and El Paso Police Department have identified over 40 military-affiliated Folk Nation gang members stationed at the Fort Bliss Army Installation in Texas who have been involved in drug distribution, robberies, assaults, weapons offenses, and a homicide, both on and off the installation.
- Nearly 130 gang and extremist group members have been identified on the Fort Lewis, Washington, Army Installation since 2005. These gang members are believed to be responsible for many of the criminal misconduct incidences reported on base.
- In June 2006 an incarcerated US Army soldier and active gang member identified 60 to 70 gang-affiliated military personnel in his unit allegedly involved in the theft and sale of military equipment and weapons. The solider reported that many of the military personnel in charge of ammunition and grenade distribution are sergeants who are active gang members. There are indicators that gangs remain active in some military communities. During FY 2006, the CID initiated 16 gang investigations and reported 44 gang related incidents which occurred on Army installations or in Army communities.

Statistics from the department show that there are more than 21,000 gangs in the country with more than 700,000 members.
And those numbers are increasing, ABC News reported Tuesday. The department said the groups use "Net Banging," the use of online content glorifying the gang lifestyle, to recruit children as young as 8 years.- Through several weeks of field work and research there were a total of 274 Black gangs in 17 cities and five unincorporated areas in Los Angeles County. In this research, both the cities and unincorporated areas are identified as "places," a term that the U.S. Census uses.
- There are about 200 Crip gangs in 21 cities and places in LA County, Black street gangs have existed in Los Angeles since the 1920s, and were usually composed of family members and close friends who committed crimes for profit, mostly hustling and robbery.
- LA Asian: The fastest growing street gangs in LA County with about 20,000 members, Asian gang members in Los Angeles County and represent a diversre array of backgrounds and affiliations. There are Asian gangs that down with the Surenos, some affiliated with Bloods and Crips and several independent entities such as the Chinese Wah Chings, Philipino, Cambodian and Vietnamese gangs.
- Immigrant Belizians, Hmong, ethnic Chinese, and Vietnamese have organized street gangs that in some ways, constitute a greater danger to the public safety than Larry Hoover’s army of drug runners who peddle dime bags in the projects.
- The traffickers who deal in human cargo are known as "snake heads." For a $15,000 commission, the snakehead who is based in China, will smuggle an illegal alien into the U.S. with the vague promise of employment and a stable life awaiting them at the end of the journey; a journey fraught with all kinds of hardship and peril. Many of these undocumented aliens arrive in Chicago every week. Some of them are criminals who import ancient ethnic hostilities that can erupt into gang warfare and murder at a moment’s notice.
- Tong gangs have fanned out across the U.S. and are particularly active in Maryland, Los Angeles, and New York City. Houston. Asian community was hit particularly hard in 1996 with numerous drive-by shootings and continuous gang warfare.
- Black street gangs are among the most violent, and active growing gangs in Utah, White tourists are being injured and killed by roving black male gangs.
